Shingles

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the same virus that causes chickenpox. It produces a painful rash, usually in a single band on one side of the body or face.

Common symptoms

  • Pain, tingling, or a burning feeling in one area, often before the rash appears
  • A blistering rash on one side of the body
  • Discomfort that can range from mild to severe

How we can help
Timing matters with shingles — antiviral treatment is most effective when started early. Come in as soon as you can and our pharmacist can assess your symptoms, advise on pain relief, and guide you on the right next steps.

When to seek further advice
Seek prompt medical attention if the rash is near an eye, is widespread, is very painful, or if you have a weakened immune system. While you have a rash, avoid close contact with anyone who hasn't had chickenpox, as well as pregnant women and newborn babies.
