Cold Sores

Cold sores are small, painful blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus. Once you've had the virus it can reactivate from time to time, often triggered by stress, illness, or strong sunlight.

Common symptoms

  • Tingling, itching, or burning around the lips before a sore appears
  • Small fluid-filled blisters, usually around the mouth
  • Crusting and scabbing as the sore heals

How we can help
Antiviral creams work best when applied as early as possible — ideally at the tingling stage — so it's worth speaking to us promptly. We can recommend treatment to ease discomfort and advise on managing recurrences.

When to seek further advice
Please seek advice if a cold sore is severe or widespread, appears near the eyes, doesn't heal within about ten days, or if you have a weakened immune system.
