Acute Infective Conjunctivitis

Infective conjunctivitis is a common, usually mild, infection of the surface of the eye that can be caused by bacteria or a virus. It's often called "pink eye" and can be contagious.

Common symptoms

• A red or pink eye
• A gritty or uncomfortable feeling
• Watery or sticky discharge, sometimes with crusting on the lashes

When to seek further advice
Please see your GP if you have eye pain, sensitivity to light, changes in vision, if a newborn baby is affected, or if symptoms don't begin to settle.
