2023 marks a significant milestone for the Ahern family as it is 50 years since Henry opened the doors of the pharmacy in January 1973.
It all started when Nellie Spring of Gortavillin married Dan Ahern from Inchincummer in 1933. Nellie took over the running of Farranfore Post Office from her aunt Ellen Bell. The set up home and moved the post office to its current site, which was adjacent to the local Health Board dispensary. They then added a shop to the post office in the early 1930s. Nellie and Dan raised a family of 7 children which included 3 pharmacists; Mary, Anne & Henry.
Henry built the pharmacy onto the existing post office which opened in 1973 and developed the business. Initially he specialised in veterinary pharmacy. Maureen O’Shea of Firies joined Henry’s team when they married in 1975 and together became a key port of call over the years serving the local community day or night.
Dan's own childhood memories of the pharmacy are of customers calling at all hours for urgent and not so urgent needs!! However, these memories made him conscious, on his return in 2004, of not losing sight of core traditional values:- providing a professional, yet personal service
- honest and trustworthy advice
- quality products at a reasonable price
Throughout the years, we have put together a fantastic team of knowledgeable, compassionate staff, who have been recongised nationally for their high quality of customer service.
Even though there have been many changes since 1973, our priority remains to serve you and the community by continuing to provide the quality service which you deserve.
We sincerely thank all our customers for your support over the past 50 years.
